"The boys asked me to sit in for a show last night at the casino and then for the park gig today. Before the park gig, a band meeting was held with me standing there unloading my gear and Paul let me know that a group decision was made. They all wanted me to join and I was asked right there. I said I would love to."

MUSIC IS LIVE AND WELL "AROUND CHILLIWACK"
"I needed to get them out there, anyway I could. The quickest and easiest method was to sit down in my studio and play them live. Now with these releases being out there, I can focus on recording them in the studio for an album later release. It also clears my head for more clarity so I can look inside somewhere and write new ones to fuel the creative machine."
-Erik J. Matthews
SOUTHERN TOWN ROMANCE was the first song of the batch to be recorded. Erik chose this track due to the high rotation of live performances he had with it in previous set lists.

LET'S GO LAY SOME DOWN TRACK
Today is a big day for Erik J. Matthews. After a few meetings with Tractorgrease Studio, Erik is going into the studio to begin recording a handful of his original songs.
"It's exciting! It's stressful! It's supposed to be fun and I am sure it will be once I have settled down and get comfortable. It's been a long time coming for me in regards to recording my music so I'm chomping at the bit."
-Erik J. Matthews
Veteran session musicians, Bill Fulton and Geoff Eyre will be taking part in the recording sessions at Tractorgrease.
A few days prior to Birgitta's 65th birthday, the family was shocked to learn of her pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Birgitta felt unwell for a few weeks and after being brushed off the first few times, doctors quickly realized it was much worse than initially suspected.
Birgitta has undergone emergency surgery; an estimated 3-4 hour procedure that last nearly nine hours which saw the surgeons remove 22 lymph nodes (5 tested as cancerous) several organs including her spleen, gall bladder, a portion of her large intestine and 35% of her pancreas.
Now in the midst of chemotherapy, she has developed a blood clot which has to be controlled by a daily injection, everyday for the next 12 months, possibly indefinitely. There are high costs and out of pocket expenses for this treatment that has no coverage from insurance.
Still fighting and in good spirits, she has now developed a blood infection. Antibiotics are being used to combat this infection.
Throughout the remainder of 2019 (since early July when his mother was diagnosed) and going forward indefinitely, Erik is DONATING NET PROCEEDS from all merchandise sales to help pay for out of pocket medical expenses that will help ease some financial burden to his parents.
A new musical experience is coming to the Fraser Valley beginning this spring. Erik J. Matthews will be teaming up with Matthew A. Hawkins (Around Chilliwack) and Tim McAlpine (President/Creative Director at Currency Marketing) for a new live concert series called "Live Music Around Chilliwack." Tickets and other information about the show are available at www.aroundchilliwack.ca
Asking METZ where the inspiration came from, she stated: " I actually had no idea what I was trying to write when I first sat down at my keyboard. It began as a very simple waltz and ended up evolving into this. Sometimes I have no direction or clue of what I'm doing when I come up with stuff. It just happens"
"The Sound of Summer" was recorded live in STUDIO G1 with Erik J. Matthews producing and mixing the track.

NEWS AND REVIEWS
A lifelong dream of Erik's was to get himself to CHICAGO and play in a Chicago blues club. He found a club in Berwyn, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago) that was hosting an open, electric blues jam and introduced himself to the club host for a chance to get up on stage and play.
The "Harlem Avenue Lounge" was the blues club where Erik made this a reality.
"The earliest lead and soloing lessons I taught myself were based around the CHICAGO BLUES. Well, maybe not lessons specific because I was just jamming along to songs at the beginning. Now, of course it was the BEATLES at first, but from them I learned about Elmore James and Big Bill Broonzy (both CHICAGO BLUESMEN) just as I learned about Carl Perkins and Jimmy Rodgers. But it really was the Stones, Chuck Berry and Clapton, with their versions of blues that I learned off of. From them, I learned about Muddy Waters, Matt "Guitar" Murphy, BUDDY GUY and others. I read about how B.B. KING lived in Chicago after leaving Mississippi and about Robert Johnson traveling north from the delta too. Maybe this is why I am also a Cubs fan.
In Beatles interviews, I read and heard a lot about how they were so quick to point out their heroes and influences. I never forgot that and will always let people know where my inspirations come from. It's a great way to spread the word about so many amazing artists that I respect musically. That's why coming to Chicago and playing in a club like this is a big deal for a small northern town Canadian like me."
-Erik J. Matthews
Now Erik hopes to some day get his chance to play only a few miles down the road from the "Harlem Avenue Lounge" at BUDDY GUY'S LEGENDS in Chicago. Seeing Buddy Guy perform live several times and playing along to his songs for years, Mr. Guy is a very influential GUITARIST to Erik's style of electric blues.

MAGGPIE SAYS GOODNIGHT
The boys of "Maggpie" played their FINAL gig together last night at the Triple Play Pub in the heart of downtown Chilliwack, B.C.
The breakup of the group came as a surprise for people not involved inside the band as a decision to do so was formally made only earlier this month.
A consistent stamp on the map within the Fraser Valley music scene, they performed their SWAN SONG to a packed club yesterday evening. Sharing along in the memories of the band, the evening featured several local guest performers who took the stage and shared the spotlight alongside Paul, Stu, Keith and Erik.
"Maggpie" would like to express its great appreciation to all the fans who attended their gigs over the years and a special thanks to the venues and promoters for the opportunity to perform live around the area.
SEPT 12/ 2018
ERIK J. MATTHEWS and BRITTANY METZ join forces on this single, presenting gorgeous vocal harmonies that lean in something of a SIMON & GARFUNKEL direction. The poetic imagery and self-reflection in the lyrics add to this NOSTALGIC effect, as does the simplicity of the acoustic guitar set-up.
From a songwriting perspective, the melody of the song has a FAMILIAR feel – it’s easy to get into it, it’s comforting in that we recognise the style and this arrangement of notes, descending at the end of each phrase. Structurally the song moves forwards in a manner that holds your interest though, the sections and the cut aways – the solo vocal moments, the switch to the hook, the development of the story line – all of this helps ADD LAYERS OF DETAIL to an otherwise fairly standard piece of performance. All of this, actually, fuses BEAUTIFULLY, resulting in something that finds itself floating much higher than the opening moments may imply.
By the end of the song, the concept LINGERS in your mind, certain lines stay with you – those roses at the door draw intrigue and invite you to replay the song or relive the experience to gain a little more clarity.

CALLING IT QUITS
THE LOUNGE HOUNDS are a trio once again. Erik J. Matthews has officially resigned as one of the guitarists in the local, rockabilly band.
After a successful 4 month stint, he informed bandmates, Keith, Evan and Tyson that he was stepping down to give focus to his own original project.
"There is no bad blood. I told the boys from the beginning that I would try it out and was more interested in being a guitarist for hire when they wanted to add the more rock elements to their repertoire. As a three piece, doing rockabilly, they don't need me. They are great with that lineup."
